Using NoScript Firefox Extension to Quickly Find Out What 3rd Party Services a Website is Using

Submitted by kai on Wed, 2007-10-03 21:00. ::

NoScript is a great Firefox extension that lets you hand-pick which web sites to be allowed to use JavaScript, Java, and Flash. You can surf online safer and faster(because of fewer JavaScripts running).

Another cool thing about it is that by looking at what domains NoScript allows and blocks(right-click on the "S" icon), you get an idea of what kind of services a website uses. BTW, you can just look at the HTML page source codes to find out what JavaScripts are loaded if you have too much time.

For example, you can see my site loads JavaScripts from "google-analytics.com","performancing.com", "crazyegg.com"(all 3 are web analytics services), "meebo.com"(the Meebo chat widget).

Plan for Scuttlelicious 0.2.1

Submitted by kai on Mon, 2006-02-27 17:12. ::

Here's my plan for Scuttlelicious 0.2.1

  • fetch user's recent popular tags and display them
  • restore the display of a progress dialog when a bookmark is posted to server(this was in versions prior to 0.2, but I removed it. Now I regret the decision because the posting can "freeze" Firefox if the connection to the bookmarking server is slow)
  • automatically notify users that an update is available through Firefox's extension window

Please let me know if you have any suggestion.

Scuttlelicious 0.2 Released - Support Posting of Private and Shared with Watch List Bookmarks

I've upgraded Scuttlelicious to version 0.2 for Firefox 1.5:

Change:

  • Added the ability to set the privacy level of the bookmark being posted under the page info tab and save the bookmarking privacy level preference under the login tab. This works with scuttle.org. Please download latest codes (specifically, api/posts_add.php) from Scuttle if you run your own copy of Scuttle.
  • The following statement is out-dated because the Scuttle's developer has applied my patch to the source tree.

Version 0.1.3:

Upgrade to Firefox 1.5

Submitted by kai on Mon, 2005-12-12 20:31. ::

I just upgraded from Firefox 1.0.x to 1.5.

Noticeable improvements:

  • going back/forward is a lot quicker
  • no more crashes with GMail

Disappointments:

  • All the extensions are still listed in non-alphabetical order in the extension window. Because I use so many extensions, it's hard to find a particular one from the un-ordered list.

Problems:

  • Many of the extensions I used were disabled after the upgrade because of version incompatibility. After I upgraded many of them and re-enabled them, With my default profile, Firefox took like 3+ seconds to appear when I switch from another application to it. Because I had no problem running with another profile that has fewer extensions, the problem must have something to do with some of my extensions. I had to disable all the extensions and turned them on in groups to narrow down the cause of the problem. It turned out that InFormEnter is the guilty extension that caused the slowness.
