How to Fix Firefox Extension Installation/Download Error: "download error -228"

I had consistently ran into the error message "download error -228" whenever I tried to install or upgrade any Firefox extension on my Mac. I followed the Mozilla guide and the Ubuntu thread to try to fix the error. No luck.

I even installed Firefox portable, same problem.

I finally came across the same problem and the right solution.

If you are using Firefox 3, and Firefox disables the extension or doesn't allow you to install the above version, you will need to get the version at the official Firefox Add-ons site because Firefox 3 requires a extension hosting site to be SSL-enabled

Using NoScript Firefox Extension to Quickly Find Out What 3rd Party Services a Website is Using

NoScript is a great Firefox extension that lets you hand-pick which web sites to be allowed to use JavaScript, Java, and Flash. You can surf online safer and faster(because of fewer JavaScripts running).

Another cool thing about it is that by looking at what domains NoScript allows and blocks(right-click on the "S" icon), you get an idea of what kind of services a website uses. BTW, you can just look at the HTML page source codes to find out what JavaScripts are loaded if you have too much time.

For example, you can see my site loads JavaScripts from "google-analytics.com","performancing.com", "crazyegg.com"(all 3 are web analytics services), "meebo.com"(the Meebo chat widget).

Scuttlelicious 0.2.2 Released - Compatible with Firefox 2.0, Localization in Turkish

Compatible with Firefox 2.0
Location in Turkish(tr-TR) by Serdar Bakar. But I think Serdar Bakar still ran into problems with the Turkish localization. Please report any problem.

I localized this extension in Simplified Chinese(zh-CN) and Traditional Chinese(zh-TW)
Edited(4-23-2006): updated the extension to include Japanese localization provided by Tadashi Jokagi

Plan for Scuttlelicious 0.2.1

Here's my plan for Scuttlelicious 0.2.1

fetch user's recent popular tags and display them
restore the display of a progress dialog when a bookmark is posted to server(this was in versions prior to 0.2, but I removed it. Now I regret the decision because the posting can "freeze" Firefox if the connection to the bookmarking server is slow)
automatically notify users that an update is available through Firefox's extension window

Please let me know if you have any suggestion.

Getting started with extension development - since Firefox 1.5, you can set up your extension development environment such that you don't need to rebuild an extension, reinstall it every time you make some changes. It saves a lot of time!

Scuttlelicious 0.2 Released - Support Posting of Private and Shared with Watch List Bookmarks

Added the ability to set the privacy level of the bookmark being posted under the page info tab and save the bookmarking privacy level preference under the login tab. This works with scuttle.org. Please download latest codes (specifically, api/posts_add.php) from Scuttle if you run your own copy of Scuttle.

The following statement is out-dated because the Scuttle's developer has applied my patch to the source tree.

I've upgraded Scuttlelicious to version 0.1.2 and 0.1.3. Upgrading to version 0.1.3 is strongly recommended unless you have to use Firefox 1.0.x
