Tahoe Vacation Guide: Don't Book Your Skiing/Snowboarding Trip to Tahoe for Thanksgiving or Christmas NOW

Submitted by kai on Sun, 2007-11-04 21:18. ::

It is early Nov. You are so ready to get head-start of your 2007-2008 skiing/snowboarding season by booking a trip to Tahoe for Thanksgiving or Christmas now. But you still see sunny weather in Tahoe area.

So should you bet or not?

Probably not because it's really a hit or miss whether mother nature will dump enough snow by Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In my past experience, most of time, there's not enough snow in Thanksgiving. Sometimes, there's not enough snow in Christmas. For example, last year was a really bad drought year in Tahoe, and the season didn't really get started until Jan.

I never thought about my video would get featured somewhere. It was just for fun and showing the nice things about Diamond Peak.

Fantastic Salt Lake City Snowboarding Trip Recap

Submitted by kai on Fri, 2007-04-13 23:27. ::
here's a delayed recap of my Fantastic snowboarding trip in Salt Lake City in Feb:

My wife and I flew to Salt Lake City on Fri. night from Oakland. On Sat, we snowboarded in Brighton between noon and 7pm. Because we got up late, we went for Brighton's night skiing offer to get a full day of snowboarding. Brighton isn't a big resort. It's pretty crowded with a lot of snowboarders. The condition was so-so, but it started to snow hard in late afternoon.

The next day, we went to Snowbird. It had the best condition I've ever had. It snowed all day. The powder was so good(soft, deep). The mountain is so big. It wasn't crowded at all. Everything was so perfect. The only thing we regretted was that because it snowed hard, we didn't go through the turnel on the top to the other side of the mountain.

Not So Great Snowboarding Experience at Kirkwood

Submitted by kai on Wed, 2006-02-08 21:15. ::

I went to a company-sponsored one-day bus trip Kirkwood last Sat. Here's the trail map of Kirkwood.

It was snowing hard on the way. The bus had to be on chains.

In the morning, it was snow showering. My supposedly-water-proofed gloves and jacket got wet inside. The visibility was low as the lens of my goggle was covered by snow and rain. The left side (lift #4) of the mountain had pretty good powder though. But it takes a long time to get there though as one needs to transfer on two lifts.

During lunch time, it rained at the lobby level. But sun came out in the afternoon.

Where should you go for skiing/snowboarding during Christmas and New Year in Lake Tahoe?

Where should you go for skiing/snowboarding during Christmas in Lake Tahoe?

I won't go snowboarding during Christmas.

But I know a lot of people(including those flying across country to Reno) are going to Tahoe for skiing/snowboarding between now and New Year's day.

To make your visits worthwhile during the peak season, if I were you, I'd go to Kirkwood or Mt Rose because these two resorts are located at higher Elevation and has been getting some new (wet)snow.

The snow condition is especially bad this season around Tahoe, especially compared to the great condition in last season. Although it's rained a lot in the past few days in Bay Area(which usually means snow in Sierra), the temperature has been warm overall. It ended up raining in Sierra as well!

First 2005-2006 Season Tahoe Snowboarding Trip - Ouch!! Bruised ribs

Submitted by kai on Tue, 2005-12-06 22:58. ::

I went up to Tahoe this past weekend for snowboarding after the recent storm in last week.

I went to Kirkwood on Sat. The condition in Kirkwood was excellent. But there's only one high speed lift operating!

I went to Heavenly on Sun. Its condition was good, but not as good as Kirkwood's. On the first run down on Neveda side, I got a bruised rib when I fell forward and landed my ribs on top of the wallet in my inner pocket.
It hurt quite a bit. I had a red cross memeber check my ribs on the mountain. He said it's just a bruise, and it's up to me whether to continue snowboarding.

First Try on Waxing a Snowboard - over-waxed!

Submitted by kai on Tue, 2005-12-06 22:44. ::

In preparing for the up-coming ski season, I decided to wax my new 2004-2005 Burton Clash snowboard. It's a 1-year old new board that didn't have much factory wax left.

I found the follwoing tips online:

I was going to wax my board using a hair dryer instead of a heat gun. But my local Walgreen store had a cheap iron for $8. so I just bought one for the waxing job.
