Switched Hosting Provider: Site5 ==> Dreamhost
I migrated the hosting provider of this site from Site5.com to DreamHost on Fri. The migration went through rather smoothly. I did a test first on running my blog on DreamHost first. I imported the DB and copied over my Drupal installation. Everything worked fine. Then I updated my domain to point to Dreamhost's DNS servers and turned on my blogging site on DreamHost. Meanwhile, I've kept my blog site running on site5.com because the DNS server update can take up to 48 hours to propagate.
I did have problems with the switch:
- Drupal's captcha module no longer produces readable captcha images if I choose to use PHP 5 instead of PHP 4.
- DreamHost's MySQL DB went down for about two hours on Sat afternoon which basically made my site inaccessible. I actually filed two support tickets. They claimed they fixed it with the first ticket, but the problem was still there. So I had to file another ticket.
Reasons for switching to DreamHost:
- DreamHost has more features
- MySQL 5 and PHP 5
- Subversion repository hosting
- Unlimited domains
- More storage, more bandwidth
- DreamHost is a lot cheaper - Dreamhost's offer of $9.25 for one year of Level 1 shared hosting plan is just too good compared to site5's plan
- People recommend DreamHost
Although I moved my site off site5, I highly recommend it because I haven't experienced any downtime for the past year, and their support is superior(their support response time is fewer than 10 minutes)
