How to Fix Firefox Extension Installation/Download Error: "download error -228"

I had consistently ran into the error message "download error -228" whenever I tried to install or upgrade any Firefox extension on my Mac. I followed the Mozilla guide and the Ubuntu thread to try to fix the error. No luck.

I even installed Firefox portable, same problem.

I finally came across the same problem and the right solution. It turned out WASP(the Web Analytics Solution Profiler firefox extension) had a serious bug which made the "TemporaryItems" folder under "your user name"/Libraries/Caches folder not writable.

To fix it:

uninstall WASP from Firefox and close Firefox(otherwise, you will run into the same problem again).
locate the "TemporaryItems" folder in Finder.
right-click and select "Get Info" in the menu.
click the lock sign on the lower right hand corner. Input your password at the prompt.
the sharing & permissions panel will get activated. Make sure you have "Read & Write" privilege for the current user.
Start Firefox.

To uninstall the extension, click "Tools" => "Add-ons". Then select the extension, click "Uninstall" button.

I've been fighting this for a while, and finally was able to get this fixed when I found your blog post. In my case, it was the ~/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems folder that was set to read only, not ~/Library/Caches.

Thanks for pointing out, Ryan. As you said, it's actually TemporaryItems, not Caches folder
